It turns out procrastination is not typically a function of laziness, apathy or work ethic as it is often regarded to be. It’s a neurotic self-defense behavior that develops to protect a person’s sense of self-worth.

You see, procrastinators tend to be people who have, for whatever reason, developed to perceive an unusually strong association between their performance and their value as a person. This makes failure or criticism disproportionately painful, which leads naturally to hesitancy when it comes to the prospect of doing anything that reflects their ability — which is pretty much everything.

But in real life, you can’t avoid doing things. We have to earn a living, do our taxes, have difficult conversations sometimes. Human life requires confronting uncertainty and risk, so pressure mounts. Procrastination gives a person a temporary hit of relief from this pressure of “having to do” things, which is a self-rewarding behavior. So it continues and becomes the normal way to respond to these pressures.

Particularly prone to serious procrastination problems are children who grew up with unusually high expectations placed on them. Their older siblings may have been high achievers, leaving big shoes to fill, or their parents may have had neurotic and inhuman expectations of their own, or else they exhibited exceptional talents early on, and thereafter “average” performances were met with concern and suspicion from parents and teachers.

We simply cannot have a functioning federal system in which neutral, independent offices are ignored, pressured, and/or censored when Republicans don’t like what they have to say. We’ve now seen this recently with the Bureau of Labor Statistics and Congressional Budget Office, and democratic norms dictate that GOP officials cut this out. Really, just stop it. If objective truths bother you, don’t blame the messenger, blame your bogus assumptions.

This is a much more important article than it may appear on the surface. It shows exactly why it was such a mistake for Google to capitulate to the carriers. They made the proverbial deal with the devil, trading control of their destiny for traction. Too bad.

Make no mistake, when Andy Rubin tells Dieter Bohn and Nilay Patel of The Verge that “costs” and “battery life” are two major factors in the decision, it’s pure misdirection. Said another way, it’s bullshit. How do we know this? Just look at the iPhone 5. It’s rolling out on LTE networks around the world just fine with its thin design, multiple antennas, and solid battery life.

The real issue here is that Google wants to sell an unlocked LTE phone and can’t because the U.S. carriers (Verizon in particular) have them over a barrel. And why do they want to sell unlocked phones (which are more expensive since they’re not subsidized by the carriers)? Because the carriers have proven time and time again that they will not allow Google to push timely Android updates.

And yet, Apple has no problem shipping iOS updates over the same networks. Why? Because they strong-armed Verizon into the same deal they got with AT&T. They fought for the user. Google sold us out to sell some phones. Now the devil is collecting.

“What does it say about us when we are simultaneously pro-life and pro AK-47′s? What does it say about us when God’s will would allow a rapist to ask for shared custody and child support payments? What does it say about us when a black guy’s in charge and we say things like “it’s time to take America back”? What does it say about us when we think the institution of marriage is threatened by gay people who love each other, but not by idiotic game shows like “The Bachelor”? What does it say about us when we export democracy with Hellfire missiles, then restrict the right to vote here? What does it say about us when we build nuclear submarines to defend against exploding vests? What does it say about us when we think a guy who doesn’t drink, doesn’t smoke, keeps his money offshore, stubs his toe and says “H-E-double hockey sticks” and wears magical underwear can feel our pain? What does it say about us when we demand less government and more FEMA? What does it say about us when we completely forgot the colossal shit storm we were in four years ago?

The answer, my friends, is not blowing in the wind. The answer is, “We are fucking crazy.””

The New Jim Crow:

Beyond the sheer number of those incarcerated in the US the racial composition of this group is also of interest. In 2008 1 out of 9 black men between the ages of 20-34 were incarcerated. For whites over the age of 18 the incarceration rate was 1 out of 106. The US incarcerates more of it racial minority populations than any nation in the world. As a comparison, the US incarcerates a greater proportion of its black citizens than did South Africa under apartheid.

The problem worsens when you go on to consider life after prison. Those who leave prison with a felony conviction are effectively disenfranchised, politically and economically. Upon leaving prison, or merely taking a plea bargain to avoid prison, you will find yourself unable to vote. Functionally, what we are witnessing in America is what some have called “the New Jim Crow” where under the label “the War on Drugs” (started under Nixon and ramped up under Reagan) black men are being swept up into the prison system and being removed from voting rolls.

In addition, with a felony conviction on your record your ability to get a job is greatly impaired. And yet, with a felony conviction, you will be unable to apply for federal assistance to help feed yourself or your family. You are also unable to receive federal loans to pursue higher education to better your life. You are, in effect, locked into a life of poverty, with all the generational effects that might have.

All this, perhaps, wouldn’t be so bad if black men used drugs more than white men. But that’s not the case. Drug use is the same. The only difference is that blacks are arrested, convicted and, thus, politically and economically disenfranchised at a higher rate.
